Odjfell Power Tower Case Study

Overview

 

The ATEX rated Power Tower ecolift & pecolift are the next step in low level access equipment for the offshore market. These drastically improves safety and efficiency when compared to using conventional ladders, as there is no requirement to have people holding the ladder, observing the operation or three points of contact.

Along with reducing the volume of scaffolding on site for low level work or rope access requirements, these units are:

Case Study

 

Access to the rear top drive

  • This shows access to the rear of the top drive, primarily the lube oil motor, which we have had issues with in the past, access proved extremely difficult from the MAB.
  • The only other method would be to erect a scaffold, which would obviously take a great deal of time to erect, which is not efficient in an operational mode.
  • Time savings against scaffold erect and dismantle would be approx. 1 shift to erect and 1 shift to dismantle.
  • The use of this platform is a much easier and timely option in the event of a breakdown during drilling operations.

Access to the V-door

  • This is a much easier method for accessing the top of the V-door, this also saves us having to utilise the scaffold team to either erect a scaffold, or tie ladders in to the door.
  • Working from this platform is also a safer method of accessing these rollers. Time savings against scaffolding approx. 1 shift to erect and 1 shift to dismantle.
  • Access to erect scaffold during drill floor operations would not be granted as this is on the fringe of the red zone.
  • We could manage this safely working alongside the drill crew to carry the required maintenance out at our own convenience without the need for scaffolding.

Access to the Runway Beam

  • We normally rely on the Rope Access Team (“RAT”) for installing rigging etc to this beam.
  • This method would save waiting on the RAT, which obviously involves us requesting the necessary support from the platform team when we don’t have our own dedicated team onboard, which would help greatly in the event of a mud pump breakdown for example.
  • Time savings against rope access hanging rigging approx. 2 hours. Not a great time saving, but in the event of a breakdown, we would not have access to the RAT resource as and when required without authorisation from the platform MTL.
  • Having this platform would allow us to be more self-reliant in the event of a breakdown requiring rigging in this area.

Access to the rear top drive

  • Odfjell estimate of time saved: 1 shift to erect and 1 shift to dismantle.
  • Odfjell information on number of people per shift – 3
  • FIS estimate of true cost per person per day offshore based on industry rule of thumb – £1k per day
  • So total cost saving is 2 shifts * 3 people * £1k = £6k saving every time this is required.
  • What if we assume the cost of platform drilling is c.£100k per day – then true saving becomes £106k every time this is required.

Access to the V Door

  • Odfjell estimate of time saved: 1 shift to erect and 1 shift to dismantle.
  • Odfjell information on number of people per shift – 3
  • FIS estimate of true cost per person per day offshore based on industry rule of thumb – £1k per day
  • So total cost saving is 2 shifts * 3 people * £1k = £6k saving every time this is required.

Access to the Runway beam

  • Odfjell estimate of time saved: 2 hours
  • Odfjell information on number of people per shift – 3
  • FIS estimate of true cost per person per day offshore based on industry rule of thumb – £1k per day
  • So total cost saving is 2 hours * 3 people * £125 per hour = £750 saving every time this is required.

Opportunity Cost

  • The above cost savings do not incorporate the fact you can have people working independently elsewhere
  • Increase POB space for more simultaneous operations
